The Best Spas in New York

Pansy The Pelican 0 0 Article rating: No rating

With the nickname of the city that never sleeps, it's no wonder that a 2022 study found New York to be the most stressful city in the US – and 30th in the world. But if there’s one positive thing to come from the fried nerves of New Yorkers, it is that the city is home to some of the world’s best spas – each with an important role to play in helping soothe the aches and pains of living in the bustling metropolis. (Because even tourists who spend their days exploring the city’s best restaurants, hotels or galleries will know this city can be as exhausting as it is exciting.)

And just as you never know what to expect in New York, this selection of spas and their wellness treatments are as diverse as the city they call home. Whether it's treating high blood pressure caused by delays on the subway, or the city's fog, smog and pollution dulling the skin's glow, you will find there are plenty of ways to get your rest and relaxation within the concrete jungle.

Waldmann Offers Fragment of Literary History with New Pen

Waldmann pen set

There is just something about a handwritten note — the intimacy, the elegance, the precision. It’s why fountain pens have stood the test of time, even in the digital age.

Many great works of literature were penned the old-fashioned way, and this fountain pen set — the result of a collaboration between two German manufacturers — includes hand-written notes from two great authors.

Waldmann has been crafting writing instruments for over 100 years; the company was founded in 1918 in Pforzheim, the traditional German jewelry metropolis in the Black Forest, as a production site for gold and silver mechanical pencils.

The production of fountain pens followed and, to this day, Waldmann still manufactures all of its instruments in Germany.

The company has partnered with Sekrè, a German luxury handbag company that creates ‘handbags with a secret.’ The not-so-guarded secret is that each bag contains fragments of original handwritten documents by notable historical figures such as Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens.

There was some outcry about these documents being used in this way; however, many of the bags (which cost up to $7,500) have already sold.

Waldmann and Sekrè have combined their expertise to create a limited-edition fountain pen set. The Dame of Swan Court edition holds an original piece of writing by Agatha Christie; the set is limited to just 38 pieces. Private Eye of Baker Street includes a letter written by Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, and is limited to only 23 pieces.

A Travel Guide to Yuma, the Sunniest Place on Earth

Yuma

While recognized as the sunniest place on earth by Guinness World Records — averaging about 91% annual sunshine — Yuma, Arizona, offers much more than a good tan as this travel guide proves.

A thriving cultural scene, a vast desert and plenty of historical monuments, such as Fort Yuma — erected in 1850 on the banks of the Colorado River to protect against attacks by the Yuma Indians — are part of its rugged charm.

It eventually became the historical Yuma Quartermaster Depot, a 19th-century ammunition storage facility for the US Army that has taken on new life as a state park. And nearby is Yuma’s Marine Corps Air Station, an elite training base specializing in air-to-ground instruction for US and NATO forces.

Downtown Yuma is a jewel of the American West; visit the beautifully restored, 643-seat Historic Yuma Theatre, which dates back to 1912. The nearby city center boasts a lively hub with quaint shops and bustling restaurants, such as the aviary eatery Garden Café, and one-of-a-kind watering holes such as the Old Town Wine Cellar, which offers an impressive selection of international vintages.

Both business and leisure travelers can enjoy the gaming options at Quechan Casino Resort, a fully stocked gambling den that boasts 1,000 of the latest slot machines and a live poker room.

Adrenaline junkies need look no further than the Imperial Sand Dunes National Recreation Area, more than 40 miles of inland sand dunes, which extends along the eastern edge of Imperial Valley in California; every year, over a million visitors come to race four-wheelers across the dunes, paying homage to Star Wars, part of which was filmed here.

The Omni Homestead: The Great American Encore

Omni Homestead exterior

Tucked away in the Allegheny Mountains lies The Omni Homestead Resort, a destination with historical significance and character that’s only bested by its wellness credentials — just ask the 23 US presidents who have visited America’s first resort over the decades.

While this destination’s historic aura is palpable, it’s far from dated. In fact, the resort has just undergone a faithful $150m renovation — both preserving its cultural charm while bringing the property to the modern standards expected of a luxury resort. The designers followed five guiding principles: traditional, residential, lightness, sophistication and iconic. In doing so they have rejuvenated the property with signature homestead touches and nods to the flora and fauna of the local area.

From the Great Hall, to all 483 guest rooms and the iconic bathhouses at the Warm Springs Pools, this timeless spot has been reborn.

It was these springs that initially led to the hotel’s popularity. In 1764, Captain Bullitt and the Lewis brothers paid 30 shillings for 300 acres in these beautiful Virginia mountains. That land included seven natural mineral springs and, after two years of work, the area was cleared and an 18-room wooden hotel had been constructed.

Since these early homestead days, the resort has changed quite a bit. A fire in 1901 would prove the catalyst for major expansion. Yet wellness has always remained an integral part of The Omni Homestead’s offering. Focusing on five pillars — social, physical, nutritional, intellectual and emotional — this resort stretches far deeper than just spa and fitness.
